Hortensia and the Magical Brain: Poems for Kids with Bipolar, Anxiety, Psychosis and Depression is in production.
Thank you! Our Kickstarter was a great success.
We reached our goal and the book is now in production.
The therapeutic poems in Hortensia provide a tool parents and health care professionals can use to start a conversation with very young children who experience mental health symptoms.
A Bipolar Lullaby
Daddy, there’s something real under the bed.
It’s talking and chatting and gets in my head.
I see its big teeth and I hear it nashing.
Daddy, I’m scared, under the bed it’s stashing.
Turn on the light and keep my head from smashing!
Oh little gremlin, it’s just in your head.
The bipolar is rumbling and creating the dread.
It feels real cause it is, but not the way you expect.
It’s chemicals my darling creating the hex.
Think of our plan for the nighttime cauchemars.
They’re real, but they’re chemical just like the stars.
Mommy, mommy, I want to go away.
School’s too hard.
Girls talk in the park.
A face is following me in the dark.
At night, I’m alone, a breath says hello
It’s always in the other room, though.
Why me Mommy? Why me?
It has to end.
Why do I cry when baby Jasper just laughs?
My hands shake and the other day I thought of drowning my self in the bath.
I kept my clothes on and just ran the water.
You’d be better off with a different daughter.
My next step is choosing the 20 poems that will go in the book. I have 80 to choose from! Kaytie Spellman, illustrator extraordinaire is able to focus solely on the book thanks to our generous Kickstarter donations. All of the poems are in draft form. I will test them with kids and families directly over the next few months. The book will be published in the fall of 2017.
Who needs a haunted house when our brains create fear?
Voices and demons, scary sounds and tears.
We, the mental health brain disorder brigade
Join together with power
And keep our kids sane!
Our bookmarks are ready for all Kickstarter supporters! Illustrator Kaytie Spellman and production manager Vy Le did an amazing job!
